Stereotypes, language, and race: Spaniards’ perception of Latin American immigrants

Abstract The present study explores how two symbolic boundaries—linguistic variety and race—intersect, influencing Latin American immigrants are perceived in Spain. To this end, 217 Spaniards participated an experiment which they evaluated three men along a series of social properties, but were presented with different combinations linguistic (Argentinian, Colombian, or Spanish) race (a White Mestizo photograph). results mixed-effects regression models found that conditioned participants’ evaluations status, occupational prestige, solidarity, trustworthiness, both religiousness. We contend features become associated specific group people through rhematization (Gal, 2005; Irvine & Gal, 2000) and, by extension, ideologies link those stereotypical characteristics. conclude the “ideological twinning” (Rosa Flores, 2017) can enhance stereotypes toward impact their experiences receiving country.
